Sydney to Cairns
Follow the Pacific coast north from Sydney, one of the most perfectly situated cities in the world and instantly recognisable with its world-famous Harbour Bridge and Opera House. As you head from New South Wales into Queensland you pass Byron Bay, Australia’s easternmost point and a pleasant laid-back town, and continue past perfect sandy beaches and eucalyptus forests on Moreton Island. There are opportunities for swimming in the beautiful turquoise waters, or for white water rafting and sea kayaking if you are feeling more energetic. From Cairns you can visit one of the wonders of the natural world – the Great Barrier Reef.
Whitsunday Islands
A collection of 74 islands in the blue waters of the Coral Sea, the Whitsundays are some of the most perfect tropical islands there are, famous for the pure white beaches and great snorkelling. There is an exciting choice of optional activities available, or you can just relax and soak up the sun.
The Trip
Anyone in good health who enjoys being active should be able to take part. It can be hot and humid in Queensland, especially in the summer months.
Top Tips
For your comfort we recommend you travel as light as possible; many airlines impose a maximum weight limit of 20kg – we advise you to take 10kg as you will be on the move a good deal! One main piece (a soft bag or rucksack, not a hard suitcase). A daypack (25-30 litres, large enough to carry what you need for the day including camera, water, etc. During the hot summer months it’s important to cover up well with sun cream and a hat. If the idea of drinking lots of water doesn’t appeal, take some juice or squash concentrate and add this to your water bottle each time you fill up.
