Explore Sousse
The coastal town of Sousse has a fortified medina filled with narrow, winding streets and souks selling all manner of trinkets and spices which you will be able to explore.
Romans & Gladiators
In El Djem you will visit the third largest amphitheatre in the Roman world – walk in the footsteps of the gladiators through tunnels under the arena and gain a sense of the atmosphere from days gone by.
Camel Trek
Journey into the mountains to explore palm-filled oases. The scenery is surreal heading into the Sahara across the vast Chott el Djerid salt flats. Mounting camels you’ll ride out and camp overnight under the desert stars and watch dunes change colour with the dawn.
Troglodyte Home
In Matmata you’ll spend a night in a troglodyte dwelling – sleeping in a cave is an extraordinary experience! Mamata was made famous as Luke Skywalker’s home in Star Wars. Your final stop is Djerba, the ‘Isle of the Lotus Eaters’, for a relaxing beach stay.
The Trip
Anyone in good health can take part in this trip. Walks are easy but the heat can make them feel tougher and there can be loose rocks underfoot; all are optional. The desert camp is basic and the troglodyte village has limited facilities so be prepared to rough it for a night or two – it’s worth it!
Top Tips
Take a sarong with you. It can come in really handy, especially in the desert; use it as a headscarf, a towel, to wrap around the shoulders and protect against the sun…the list is endless…
RAMADAN: Please note that during Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, sites and museums throughout the Muslim world are subject to reduced opening hours and there may be some limitations as to the provision of services. The impact on our trips is usually minimal and indeed this can be an interesting time to visit as the streets are usually lively during the late evenings. The month culminates in the celebration of Eid al Fitr, when families eat together in celebration. The approximate dates of Ramadan in 2008 are 02 September to 02 October. In 2009 they are 22 August to 20 September. Eid el-Kbir/Eid ul-Adha is a four-day festival that is often marked by national holidays in Islamic countries. This starts about 70 days after the end of Ramadan
