Mexico – Land of the Maya
Mexico has fascinating archaeological sites, forested mountains, beautiful beaches on its Caribbean and Pacific coasts, a diverse cultural history and lively cities. Travelling east from the bustling capital in the mountains to the lowlands of the Yucatan Peninsula, this itinerary takes in all the essential elements of this country. The route passes through Oaxaca, one of the most relaxing cities and starting point for a visit to the pyramids at Monte Alban, before continuing to the stunning ruins at Palenque, Uxmal and Chichen Itza. Reaching the Caribbean, there is time to relax on the beach or snorkel in a cenote, an underground river.
Cultural history
The impressive and well-preserved Mayan ruins that dot the Yucatan region date back over a thousand years and show how advanced this civilisation was. The society followed a complex religious order and developed complicated astronomical information to determine the occurrence of events. In Palenque, the Temple of the Cross contains typical examples of intricate Mayan relief panels. Chichen Itza is perhaps one of the best-known sites, and was recently included on the list of the seven New Wonders of the World.
